Delete a Custom Category
Learn how to delete a custom category.
Custom Categories can be deleted if they were created in error (such as a duplicate category) or if you are no longer using them and will not need to reference them in any historical reporting. Deleting categories may impact historical data, so you should only delete categories when you are certain you will not need to reference them for any records.
Please note that a category cannot be deleted if:
- There are any users still associated with that category. You will need to remove the category and labels from any user records before you can delete them.
- There are any active assignments referencing the category. Because these classifications are often used in creating automated assignments if a Category or Label is used in an Active assignment, then you will not be able to edit or delete them. Once an assignment is closed out or deactivated, then you will be able to delete edit the associated categories or labels.
Follow the steps below to delete a category or label.
- Go to Users > Custom Categories
- Find the category you want to update and click Edit in the bottom right corner
- From the Manage Category page, you can delete a label by clicking the trash icon to the right of the label
- Click OK to confirm that you want to delete the label.
- You may get an error if the label is still associated with any users.
- If this happens, remove the label from the users before coming back to delete the label.
- Click Save to apply your changes.
- To delete a category entirely, you must first delete all labels for that category. Then you will see a trash icon on the Custom Categories page. Click the trash icon to delete the category.
